Abandoned Seafarer Map
w/ Jacob Bolton and Eliza Ader
ongoing
The Abandoned Seafarer Map is a counter-mapping project that tracks the systemic abandonment of seafarers by shipowners and the shipping industry at large. Initiated by Eliza Ader, the project now covers all cases from the ILO abandonment database going back to 2004, and is updated on a quarterly basis along with a substack update with more in-depth writing on particular cases or patterns across cases.
Alongside the map we keep an up to date and open access database that includes all ILO cases, each of which has been linked to corresponding IMO data on vessel characteristics and ownership.
